Learning Expedition on Offshore Wind with Occitanie Region

From the 5th to the 7th of October, a delegation from the Occitanie region in France came to Norway to meet offshore-wind industrial and institutional stakeholders, in the context of a business expedition organised by Team Norway.

The delegation was led by Jalil Benabdillah, vice-president of the Occitanie region, and included representatives from AD’OCC, Occitanie’s economic development agency, as well as various regional stakeholders involved in renewables such as : Nexeya, Schlumberger, SEMOP Port-la-nouvelle, Ponticelli, Ocean Winds, Valeco, Dietsmann, and Novawell.

On the first day, they were welcomed by the French Ambassador to Norway for a breakfast at Résidence de France. The delegation then met with representatives from Norsk Industri and Equinor to better understand and discuss the Norwegian expertise and ongoing projects in the Offshore Wind Sector, in particular regarding floating offshore windmills.

On the second day, the delegation travelled to Haugesund to meet the Norwegian Offshore Wind Cluster. They were received by Haugesund’s mayor at the city hall, who signed a memorandum of understanding with Occitanie region. The delegation also met local industry stakeholders and visited Hywind Tampen, Equinor’s 88 MW floating wind power project which will be the world’s first floating wind farm to power offshore oil and gas platforms. The trip ended with a 3-hour boat-trip to see the Hywind Demo demonstration where the MetCentre is testing floating offshore wind turbines.

The business expedition was a first step to establish contacts for potential partnerships as Occitanie is investing massively in floating offshore wind off the coast of Port-La-Nouvelle. To further build on these contacts, Team Norway plans to bring a Norwegian delegation to Occitanie in 2022.
